Construction Management Training

Learn how to plan, coordinate, and monitor construction projects. Hands-on training in running a construction office, accounting, purchasing materials, hiring subcontractors, and creating work schedules. Start your career in just 12 months.

What’s Your Role as a Construction Manager?

Construction managers plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate construction projects. They have a special skillset that combines construction knowledge with project management.

Construction managers are often responsible for the following tasks:

  • Developing construction project budgets
  • Creating construction schedules and monitoring progress
  • Preparing contracts with architects, consultants, clients, suppliers and subcontractors
  • Coordinating the purchase of building materials and land acquisitions
  • Preparing progress reports on construction projects
  • Helping with accounting tasks (creating purchase orders, processing invoices, doing payroll)
  • Maintaining files and records

Herzing’s Construction Management training teaches skills required to work in any type of construction office.

In this program you will learn:

  • Industry standards for health and safety on construction sites
  • The roles and responsibilities of all the main positions in the construction industry
  • How to read orthographic projections, detailed assembly drawings, pictorial drawings, schematics and blueprints

Occupational Health and Safety

Occupational health and safety is a cross-disciplinary area concerned with protecting the safety, health, and welfare of people engaged in work or employment. As a secondary effect, it may also protect co-workers, family members, nearby communities, and other members of the public who are impacted by the workplace environment. Topics include knowledge of the Acts, protocols and safety manuals, inspection agency familiarization, and completion of the safety certification requirements.

Introduction to Construction

This module covers the history of the construction industry, safety standards and practices. It covers the evolution of construction and looks towards the future of the industry. In addition, the skills and tasks associated with most positions in the construction industry are discussed. The remainder of the modules focus on material recognition and trade terminology, allowing students to effectively understand the basics of the construction industry.

Introduction to Estimating and Sketching

In this module, students will be exposed to orthographic projections, detailed assembly drawings, pictorial drawings, schematics, and blueprints. Students will interpret various charts, listing the advantages and disadvantages of each. The students will learn estimating using various resources including a cost-carrying program. The module will provide a general overview of all elements involved in estimation, including evaluating bids and tenders.

Organizational Structures and Strategies

This course introduces students to the types of organizational structures found in construction companies. It focuses on organizational behaviour and the ways organizations create and reach their operating potential. This module covers operational strategies, including methods of inventory control and types of distribution channels. It also covers organizational cultures and ethical practices in a business environment.

Managerial Finance

In this module, students will learn the duties of managerial finance. Students will learn to read, comprehend, and create basic financial statements according to GAAP. They will learn to evaluate the financial position of a company and recognize necessary changes to be made. They will learn to manage working capital accounts of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and inventory. Students will also be able to assess the financial position of a company from a futuristic perspective. Students will be able to create and evaluate budgets for organizations. In addition, they will learn how to manage payroll and bookkeeping for an organization. This module will also cover compliance standards and ethical practices.

Marketing Development

In this module, students will learn, understand, and utilize the four P’s of marketing: promotion, price, placement, and product. They will be able to create a consumer analysis and competitive analysis and recognize their target market. They will be able to create a marketing strategy indicative of the organization’s corporate capabilities and external environment to remain competitive in the industry.

Human Relations Management

This module emphasizes the important people to an organization. Hiring policies, personnel file requirements, scheduling, and benefits are explored to teach students how to effectively organize their personnel. In addition, this module focuses on organizational behaviour and how to manage and motivate the attitudes and behaviours of individuals and groups in an organization.

Project Management

This course introduces an overview of managing projects, including timelines, resources, risk, and cost. Topics include the project life cycle, stakeholder involvement, responsibility, assignment matrices, work breakdown structures, risk mitigation and monitoring, cost estimation, critical path analysis, project evaluation, and closeout.

Internship

The internship component of the program is the practical application of a students’ knowledge and skills in an industry environment. The industry shall be directly related to the students’ program of study. The internship requires full attendance working in the industry setting. The duration of the internship is five weeks.

  • Pass an entrance test administered by Herzing College
  • Be interviewed in detail regarding interest in the field
