My experience with Herzing College Toronto was nothing short of amazing. After working in the “real world” for eight years after graduating from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a B.A. in Communications and a concentration in Public Relations I was a little leery about going back to school. However, I have always been very interested in law, and after moving back to Ontario I started to check out my options. Going back to school to law school for three more years was not an option for me. However, in my research I found that Licensed Paralegals in Ontario have a lot of freedom and in certain circumstances (small claims court, provincial offences, some criminal matters, landlord/tenant, etc.) Licensed Paralegals do not need to work under the supervision of a lawyer. In fact, as I continued looking into it, I came to find out that many Licensed Paralegals have offices/practices of their own. This was extremely intriguing to me.
I looked into every single available option for the paralegal programs available at the different colleges in Toronto. At the end of the day, I chose Herzing based on many different reasons. I liked the fact that Herzing was a private college and that the classroom sizes were small. I also found the flexibility of start dates and class times to be very appealing. Last, but definitely not least, Herzing offers an accelerated program. So rather than putting my life on hold for two years, at Herzing I was able to complete my studies in one year. At the end of the day, my first “in person” impression of the school with an advisor and having had the opportunity to sit in on a class that day sealed the deal.
My year spent at Herzing far surpasses any educational experience that I had in University. The professors are actual former lawyers, as well as practicing (and non-practicing) paralegals and so not only do they know the law, they are passionate about it. The class sizes are relatively small (I would say 15 people average) and so throughout the course of my studies I was able to seek the individual attention that I needed. Everyone on the administrative staff is friendly and very supportive. I genuinely believe that they want all of their students to be successful, which is perhaps why they have an open door policy.
My education at Herzing has given me the confidence to be a successful, competent and resourceful paralegal. Once licensed by the Law Society of Upper Canada in August I feel 100% prepared to tackle the exciting world of law :)!
