What is Business Administration?

Business administration includes every aspect of running and managing a business or organization. Many departments work together to help a company run smoothly, including:

Our Business Administration training program teaches all these fundamentals. Students learn skills in each area, so they have a wide variety of job options after graduation.

Herzing College Business Administration Training Program

Our Business Administration training program teaches the skills today’s employers want. This diploma offers flexible study options and has an excellent graduate employment rate.

  • 12-month diploma program (20 hours per week, Monday – Thursday)
  • Offered on campus, online, or a blend of both through Herzing Flex-Ed

Accounting Fundamentals

This introductory basic accounting course presents the accounting cycle beginning with journalizing transactions and ending with the production of financial statements. Topics include accounting concepts and practices, recording transactions, adjusting accounts, preparation of worksheets and the closing process, and preparation of financial statements for service and merchandising businesses.

Spreadsheets I

This course provides the opportunity to study the operation and application of Microsoft Excel, a spreadsheet package. Topics include building a spreadsheet, creating formulas, using functions, creating charts, maps, and graphics, lists and data management, worksheet and workbook management, creating and printing reports.

Spreadsheets II

This course provides the opportunity to expand the understanding of the operation and application of Microsoft Excel. Topics include designing and creating forms, creation of templates, data analysis, and connectivity with other programs.

Office Applications

This course covers the use of the Microsoft Office applications Word, PowerPoint and Outlook. Topics include creating documents, editing text, creating tables, importing images, creating large documents, managing document sections, creating slideshows, managing themes, and using Outlook for email, calendars and tasks.

Business Communications

This course develops a student’s written communication skills. Emphasis is placed on the principles of effective verbal and written communication as well as presentation skills, which includes understanding the communication process and grammar fundamentals, writing various types of memos, letters, reports, as well as editing and proof-reading. The Internet is used as an information resource and a communication medium.

Organizational Behaviour

This course introduces an overview of organizational behaviour within the context of staff management examining theories of motivation, leadership, and ethics. Topics include personality traits, diversity in the workplace, Maslow’s Hierarchy, Needs Theory, types of leadership, organizational structures, organizational change, corporate culture, and conflict resolution.

Fundamentals of Marketing and Sales

This course introduces the marketing process with emphasis on the role of product, price, promotion, and distribution in the marketplace and how to develop sales techniques and methods using a relationship-building model. Topics include marketing environments, marketing planning, buying behaviours, product strategy and management, price strategy and management, retail and wholesale, personal selling, marketing communications, and emerging directions in marketing.

Project Management

This course introduces an overview of managing projects including timelines, resources, risk, and cost. Topics include the project life cycle, stakeholder involvement, Responsibility Assignment Matrices, Work Breakdown Structures, risk mitigation and monitoring, cost estimation, critical path analysis, project evaluation, and closeout.

Database Applications

This course provides the study of the elements and principles of a database management system using Microsoft Access. Topics include entering and editing data, queries and filters, creating and customizing forms, creating and printing reports, and customizing fields and tables.

Database Applications II

This course expands the study of the elements and principles of a database management system using Microsoft Access. Topics include creating databases and tables, data and field management, relational database structure and design, advanced form techniques, advanced report techniques, and linking to other documents.

Human Resources Fundamentals

This course introduces an overview of the management of human resources, recruitment, job analysis, and training. Topics include compliance with federal and provincial legislation, accommodations, health and safety, collective agreements, forecasting staffing needs, conducting interviews, employee testing, human rights, developing onboarding techniques, conducting performance reviews, and employee documentation.

Business Math

This course provides a basis of mathematics and arithmetic skills for students entering a business program to help prepare for accounting and other math related functions. Topics include working with decimal values, fraction calculations, cross-multiplication, proportions, percentage calculations, simple and compound interest, and preparing a personal budget.

Entrepreneurship

This course introduces an overview of starting and running an independent business. Topics include forms of business ownership, partnership agreements, business plans, market research techniques, dealing with competition, choosing a location, insurance needs, basics of marketing, pricing structures, distribution strategies, managing space, managing people, government regulations, startup financing, acquisitions, and franchising.

Career Development

This seminar provides an opportunity for the student to apply the techniques and processes for developing a career path and to learn lifetime career management tools and skills. Topics include career-planning, job searching, writing resumes and cover letters, refining interview skills, and preparing for a new position.

Internship

The internship component of the program is the practical application of a student’s knowledge and skills in an industry environment. The industry shall be directly related to the student’s program of study. The internship requires full-time day attendance working in the industry setting.

Instructors

Sandy Graham
Instructor, Business

Sandy joined the Herzing family in the fall of 1990, decades ago!  Hired as a teaching assistant for the Business department, she quickly discovered that teaching was her passion and destiny.  During the last 26 years, she has developed and instructed courses in the Business Administration, Office Administration, and Accounting/Payroll programs. Prior to graduating from the Business Information Systems program at Herzing, she studied Business Administration at Assiniboine Community College in Brandon and worked in both retail and production management positions.

Ping Cao (Cindy)
Instructor, Accounting and Payroll, Business Administration

Cindy joined Herzing College at the beginning of 2018. She has developed courses in the Business Administration and Payroll and Accounting programs.

Prior to join Herzing, she had over eight years’ experience in business related positions in a variety of industries and over 4 years’ experience in teaching business and language related courses. She holds a Master of Business Management, a Bachelor of Business Administration, and Graduate Certificates in International Business and International Trade. She is currently enrolled in the Educational Technology program at UBC and expecting another master’s degree in 2023.

Cindy has been known to chase Pokémon and raise chicken and cows in her virtual HayDay farm in her spare time.
