Professional Development Program:

Public Policy and Administration Certificate

Entrance Requirements: Post-Secondary degree or diploma and OR relevant experience

Today, government impacts all aspects of our lives. Everyone will feel the impact of public policies enacted by the Federal, Provincial, and municipal governments. Many citizens and groups try to influence public policy through the political process by supporting candidates and political parties. These political parties and politicians wane in popularity. Their positions on issues can change due to circumstances. So, then what? Public policy is most effective when you can change public opinion. This program will show you how this is done.

The certificate program will provide you with a solid foundation from which you can build upon in your work and help you identify the attributes required of effective policy makers.

By the end of this course, students should be able to understand and learn:

  • Theory sustaining public policy work and the realities of working in a policy role
  • Policy development cycle
  • Processes of policy consultation
  • Context in which government policy is developed
  • Skills and attributes which are required for policy work
  • Diplomacy in politics (good given current events and political climate)
  • What decision makers are looking for in policy proposals
