2.How To Land a Job at Any Company: A Step-by-Step Guide
For many, it’s important to secure a job where you can experience fulfillment and growth. In a highly competitive job market, it’s essential to highlight your skills and differentiate yourself from other candidates applying for the same position. There are key actions you may embrace to match your ideal career in terms of your skill set, experience, and the work environment you’re seeking. In this article, we review how to get your dream position at any company by following a guide of 11 steps.
How to land a job at any company
Whether you’re currently employed or seeking your first career opportunity, you can perform certain actions to get your dream position. The key is to clarify what you want from a job and what you can offer the employer. Once you gain clarity, landing your next position can be more manageable. There are different ways to land a job. Submitting an online application or sending a cover letter and resume is often the beginning stages of getting hired. Here is a guide to consider when thinking about how to land your next job:
- Reflect on what you desire in a job
Whether you are currently in a job position or are seeking employment for the first time, take some time to consider what you like about the job. Make a list of the responsibilities you enjoy and wish to continue doing. Think about the tasks involved in your ideal role. Search online for jobs that have the tasks you’d like to perform daily. Make a note of the roles and the skills and expertise you need. If you’re looking for a role in the same field of your current or last position, consider your ideal work environment. Maybe you’re looking for growth potential, a challenge, or a supervisor that motivates you. Gaining clarity on your reasons may help you highlight the jobs you might be the perfect candidate for.
- Evaluate your skills and expertise
Once you have an idea of your dream job, compare your skills and expertise with those needed for the position you want. Make a note of anything that requires improvement and create a plan to make yourself a stronger candidate. Maybe that means taking online or in-person courses, reading some books, talking with mentors and experts, or taking tests to get certain certifications.
- Go beyond submitting online applications
After submitting your application online, you may want to call the company to set up an information meeting. A conversation before a scheduled interview is an opportunity to illustrate your interest in the company and ask questions about the position. An appointment or a phone call is a great way to make yourself known to hiring managers.
- Modify your resume
To get noticed and land a job, cater your resume specifically to the requirements listed in the job description. Study the job description closely and do your research on the company. If you have any niche specialties that the employer is looking for, show them on the resume, and use industry-specific terminology. The more customized you can make your resume, the better your chance to stand out to the recruiter.
- Research companies and available roles
Once you understand what your ideal job looks like, it’s time to think about the perfect companies to work for. When you identify the companies, you can check if they’re hiring. Another way to find your ideal position is to check job search listings for the role. It might be a good idea to create a spreadsheet to track the jobs that stand out and organize the search process. If the website you’re doing your job searches on can send you alerts when new positions emerge that meet your criteria, subscribe and get the alerts. When you find a job that interests you and are unfamiliar with the company, please research it to ensure they have your desired work environment. A great way to find this information is in a company’s About Us section on their website. Check online to see if there are reviews from past employees to get a better idea about the company’s culture.
6. Create a plan
A plan is vital for success and there are some factors to consider that may help you create yours. The following are some questions to ask yourself, and the answers might help you create a plan of action that may make your job search more straightforward and efficient:
- How important is finding a new job?
- What’s the ideal time frame for finding a new job?
- What types of companies do you want to work for?
- When is the job search scheduled every week?
- Make a list of possible interview questions
Make a list of possible questions an interviewer can ask you and prepare and practise your answers. Research the common questions that are specific to the role you’re applying for. Once you have an idea of the questions, practise answering them in front of a mirror or with a friend. Try to make your answers sound as natural as possible. The goal is to make your responses sound and feel authentic. Use your body language to show interest and use active listening while providing your answers.
- Get creative
Highlight your creativity in your cover letters. Your cover letter is a great place to add
some personality. You might consider making your job application stand out by listing the reasons you’re an ideal candidate for the position. Maybe you want to include a positive thought about your last job, or perhaps you think adding the company logo to the cover letter is a nice touch. Treat your cover letter like a pre-interview and give potential employers a sense of who you are before they meet you in the interview. Adding your personality to your cover letter and resume may pre-empt some of their questions before you get to the meeting.
- Be mindful of online activity
It’s essential to ensure your social media accounts are clean and work friendly. Some companies are using special software that scans and scores social media accounts according to set standards. If your social media account is work-friendly, you may improve your chances of a company using social media to locate and contact you for open positions. When you’re actively looking for a job, it’s best to keep your social media account friendly and relevant to your job interests.
- Identify referral opportunities
Employee referrals are the best way to get hired. Think of how you may be able to connect with a particular company’s employees. You might know someone who works for one of your ideal companies. Locating and contacting that person gives you the inside track to connect with the hiring manager. Getting a referral from an employee may get you more consideration as a potential candidate since an employee vouches for you.
- Practise for interviews
Interview skills take practice. The more you practise doing something, the better you become. It’s always a good idea to prepare for the interview before, especially if you’re seeking a job in a new field. Roleplay with a family member or friend, and ask them to ask a surprise question, so you can practise responding to the unexpected. When practising, ask your friend or family member to comment on your body language. The goal is to portray confidence during the interview through your gestures, movements, and posture.
