Trauma-related and psychotic mental health disorders are examined in this course through discussion and applied case studies. This course is designed to introduce students to the current standard used in diagnosing mental disorders, the DSM-V. Students will learn the components of the mental status examination and clinical inquiry necessary to collect sufficient data to utilize the DSM-V effectively. Mindful of the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions of each person, students will be challenged to approach the evaluation of individuals with mental and emotional disorders in a holistic fashion. The course will also address the changes in diagnosis for mental health conditions from the multi-axial system used for over 30 years in the DSM-IV to the dimensional analysis approach currently used for diagnosis in the DSM-5.
