This course will explore how different backgrounds or experiences can have either a negative or positive impact on mental health. By exploring your own biases, you will have a greater understanding of how stigma can influence the way in which those with mental health concerns are treated. The prevalence of mental health concerns within indigenous peoples and the LGBTQ+ population will be discussed, in addition to the impact that different cultures and religions may have on mental health. We will also look at how the social determinants of health intersect with mental health and explore protective factors vs. risk factors.
