Overview

A valued member of the health care team, pharmacy assistants work with pharmacists to provide medication, customer service and medical products to consumers. These professionals possess a comprehensive understanding of healthcare ethics, aseptic techniques, and are comfortable using pharmacy-related computer software systems. They are exceptional organizers and multitaskers with excellent interpersonal skills. Pharmacy assistants work in a variety of environments including community, retail and hospital pharmacies, health care facilities, educational institutions and clinics.

Pharmacy Assistant Job Description

The particular responsibilities of the pharmacy assistant may vary depending on the workplace environment and employer-designed tasks; however, the following duties are typical of most job placements:

• Inventory supervision
• Labelling of pharmaceutical products
• Maintaining a database of confidential client prescription records
• Extemporaneous compounding
• Packaging medicine and other pharmacy products
• Providing customer service
• Providing medication and other pharmacy products to clients

Pharmacy Assistant Projected Demand

Prescription medication use generally becomes more frequent with advanced age and the largest segment of the Canadian population, the baby boomers, are currently becoming senior citizens. As a result of our ageing population, Canada’s demand for prescription medication is projected to increase and along with it, the need for new skilled workers in the pharmaceutical sector. The average salary of a pharmacy assistant in Canada is $13 per hour.
