Love Video Games? 3 Reasons To Pursue 3D Animation Training in Montreal

Reasons To Pursue 3D Animation Training in Montreal

While there are plenty of opportunities for new grads with 3D animation training, video games can be an excellent opportunity to get your career off the ground, especially in Canada.

In 2013, Canada jumped ahead of the UK, becoming the third largest video game-making country in the world. According to recent figures from the Entertainment Software Association of Canada, our country’s status as a top video gaming hub is only expected to continue. Since 2013, another 143 studios have opened across the country. This means that today, close to 500 active studios employ approximately 20, 400 professionals.

Why is Montreal the best city for budding 3D animation professionals who dream of working in the gaming industry? Read on to find out!

1. Montreal is one of the Biggest Game-Making Hubs in the World

Whether you want to work on the next big AAA title, attention-grabbing mobile game, or perhaps go indie, Canada (particularly Montreal) is one of the best places to be. In fact, Montreal is the top Canadian city for video game making, and one of the top cities in the world, according to a recent article by the Game Industry Career Guide.

Part of the reason for this is that the Quebec government offers generous tax breaks to video game-creators—making it more affordable to open a studio in Montreal and employ local talent. As a result, Montreal has become the home of many studios, both big and small, including:

  • Eidos (maker of Thief 4, Deus Ex)
  • Gameloft (maker of Asphalt, Heroes of Order & Chaos)
  • Warner Bros. (maker of Batman Arkham Origins, Lego Marvel Super Heroes)
  • Ludia (maker of Family Feud, Jurassic World the Game)
  • Ubisoft (maker of Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry)

In addition to these, there are also two new studios that have recently joined the pack. In July, EA announced that it would be opening a new Montreal studio under the supervision of game-making legend Jade Raymond. And, not long after, Bethesda (maker of Fallout, Dishonoured, and Doom) announced that it too would be opening a Montreal studio.

With so many top employers nearby, it’s not hard to see why Montreal has become a major city for students to launch their careers in 3D Animation!

2. Local Organisations Encourage Women With 3D Animation Training to Work in Games

If you’re a woman, you might be interested to learn that Montreal is also the home of several events and workshops dedicated to promoting diversity in the games industry.

Pixelles, for example, is a non-profit organization that offers workshops, mentorship opportunities, and game jams to women aspiring to work in gaming. Pixelles also helps them connect with current industry experts.

As a result, new grads from 3D animation colleges have access to different networking opportunities, helping them launch their new careers in games.

3. 3D Animation Training Can Lead to Opportunities All Over the World

Of course, even if you start your 3D animation training in Montreal, that doesn’t mean you have to spend your entire career in the city. Whether you want to work in other Canadian cities, such as Quebec City, Toronto, or Vancouver, or you want to work and live abroad, there are plenty of job opportunities for 3D animators in video games. In fact, many top studios in Montreal have branches all over the world!
