Shining a Light on the Future

Bright Future students walk past Michelle Mitchell, Admissions Coordinator at the Herzing College table

The poet William Butler Yeats said that education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. The path to education was illuminated from 11am to 3pm Friday, March 16 at the Murdo Scribe Centre in Winnipeg, when approximately 90 students from the three Bright Futures programs attended a career/education fair. Herzing College admission coordinator’s Michelle Mitchell and Andrew Malazdrewicz answered questions.

Students entered a drawing to win a free Herzing College sweat suit.

“We want students to know they have choices,” said admissions coordinator Michelle Mitchell. “We loved talking with the ones who stopped by, and hope we inspired them to check out Herzing College.”

“We received about about a dozen entries into our drawing,” said Andrew Malazdrewicz, admissions coordinator. “The winner will be contacted and be invited to stop by campus for a tour!”

The Bright Futures fund was established in 2008 to enable community organizations and partner schools to implement programming to improve high school graduation rates and to increase access to and retention in post-secondary education for disadvantaged, under-represented and low-income students.

The Bright Futures Career/Education fair focused on providing students with knowledge of
post-secondary programs, as well as specific supports available at the participating institutions. This would include formal ACCESS programs and less formal but necessary programs like tutoring, disability supports, and food banks on campus, daycare services, cultural activities, and other supports.

More than 200 students stopped by the lounge during the 15-minute morning and afternoon classroom breaks on Wednesday, March 14, during the first annual Popcorn Day. Sponsored by the Winnipeg Admissions Department, approximately 400 bags (six different flavors) of popcorn were given away, along with “Herzing Students Rock” pins. Participants also had a chance to win a chocolaty prize by guessing the total number of pieces of “gold” in a black leprechaun-like pot in honor of St. Patrick’s Day/Student Activity Days.

“Nelly Caldo won the pot of gold,” said admissions coordinator Michelle Mitchell. “Her guess was the closest to the true number (737), making her the winner.” Caldo is a Pharmacy Technician student who started courses last November.

But the popcorn was every bit as popular.

“The dill pickle flavor was a complete hit!” said Cherry McCormick, Medical Lab Assistant instructor. “And I found the atmosphere energizing – lots of good feelings.”

Students mingled with the staff who snapped photos of the fun. A plan is being formulated to hold similar events monthly.

“I liked popcorn day because a lot of the staff was upstairs to talk to,” said Legal Assistant student Jessica Waddingham. “I also really liked the Herzing Students Rock pins!” Her classmate agreed.

“Since popcorn is one of my favorite foods, I absolutely loved it!” said Ashley Klassen, Legal Assistant student. “It was also so nice to socialize with other students from the school.”

Herzing College Health Care Aide Students Polish and Shine in Community

December 12, 2011

Doing laundry, for many of us, is a routine task that requires little forethought. But for someone who has never used an American standard washer or dryer, the task can seem insurmountable.

On Monday, December 12, 2011, health care aide students from Herzing College – Winnipeg visited Wolseley Family Place in the Misericordia Health Centre, a community centre that offers support and activities for young families including music circle, story-telling, and something self-explanatory called, “Wiggle, Giggle and Munch.”

Local residents in need are invited to attend classes on parenting skills and cooking, have their clothes washed for minimal cost, and even enjoy low-cost meals.

It is the right environment for Herzing students to learn about the basic tasks that will help make them employable, according to Nancy Scott, Herzing Health Care Aide instructor.

“One of the biggest complaints from community agencies and their clients is that the HCAs sent to their homes don't know how to cook, do laundry, or use common household items such as a dishwasher, microwave or iron,” Scott said.

Could a cultural barrier have been impeding progress?

“These tasks are not necessarily familiar to students who have recently arrived in Canada from other countries,” Scott said.

“Many of the students have never used measuring cups and spoons, followed a recipe or cooked anything other than their traditional dishes. Reading recipes, laundry labels, sorting clothes, and using electric washers and dryers help them gain valuable experience.”

Scott hopes the students will continue to take advantage of the relationship with Winnipeg’s Wolseley Family Place. She knows she’s landed on a sweet setup for student success.

“I will be posting a WFP board in our student lounge…and I will post their schedule to inform students of volunteer opportunities.”

Grace + Ambition = $1,000 at Herzing College

winnipeg student Shanoy Lindsay

She volunteers at a hospital, a church, and the Girl Guides of Canada, all while maintaining a spot on the Herzing College Dean’s List. Her ability to balance it all with perseverance and grace has not gone unnoticed. Herzing College student Shanoy Lindsay was chosen for the John J. Brandt Memorial Scholarship Award.

The 18-year-old pharmacy technician student was presented with the $1,000 award on October 31, 2011 for the semester ending September 30, 2011.

“I am so grateful to be chosen for this scholarship,” Lindsay said. “The pharmacy tech program is something that I have really enjoyed over the past 10 months and it is definitely a step closer to my career goal.”

Lindsay connects her own drive and ambition to having witnessed it first-hand from someone she admires: her mom.

“After seeing her work so hard to give me a better life, I am always striving to make her proud,” Lindsay said. “Family is very important to me and they are always encouraging me to put my studies first so that one day I can say that I lived my life happy, healthy, and to the fullest.”

The Girl Guides, Lindsay says, is another place where she began learning lessons that she carries into every facet of her life.

“They introduced me to volunteer work and the joy you get from helping others,” she said. “The leaders highlighted our strengths, helped us improve our weaknesses and showed me how to embrace being a girl and most importantly, me.”

Herzing College is proud to count Shanoy Lindsay among their most dedicated students.

“The Herzing staff does a great job of making me comfortable. They really care about my needs, wants, and goals...instead of being just a number like at other institutions.”

Year Two: Herzing College-Winnipeg Recognized Again for Ethical Business Practices

All Manitoba area businesses were eligible but Herzing College – Winnipeg walked away a winner. On Thursday, October 20, 2011, the college was honored for the second year in a row with the Advancing the Marketplace Trust award from the Manitoba and Northwest Ontario Better Business Bureau. The event took place at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.

The BBB Torch Awards is an annual awards program to gain public recognition for businesses and organizations that maintain a solid commitment to conducting their business practices in an ethical fashion. To be eligible, an organization must be nominated and complete a formal submission. The companies are selected by a panel of independent judges to receive a Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics. A total of ten Manitoba organizations were recognized at the 2011 event.

“We received this award because we do the right thing,” said college president Bill Riches. “This is our culture. Henry and Suzanne Herzing founded our organization with the belief in high ethical standards and actions. These same values are paramount in our President Renee Herzing, our executive committee, and our board of directors.”

“This award would not be possible without the dedication and commitment of each member of the Herzing team,” Riches said.

Success Stories
“As a student, I think Herzing College’s academic program really does help us prepare for the future; not only the material that is taught, but the Instructors who teach it. This gave us the confidence to succeed. As for the internship, it gives us a glimpse of what to expect for our future.”
