Professional Development Program:

Gerontology Certificate

Entrance Requirements: Secondary degree or diploma OR relevant experience

Currently, for the first time ever, seniors make up a larger share of Canada’s population than children. In fact, since 2011, the fastest growing population is Centenarians and Statistics Canada projects that by 2031, almost 1 in 4 Canadians will be over the age of 65.

The Gerontology certificate will offer students a knowledge base in order to be able to offer holistic support and care to Canada’s aging population. The certificate will explore the aging process and how it can impact mental health. Other areas of exploration will include, ethical and legal issues, health promotion and exploration of current issues and trends.

Who Should Take the Course?
The Gerontology certificate is designed to provide specialized training for those working in related fields such as healthcare, law enforcement, education and social services. Anyone that works with seniors will benefit from this training.

Instructor Led vs. Instructor Supported Format
This certificate program offers two convenient online delivery options to best accommodate busy schedules.

Instructor Led
(Condensed Course) – 12 Weeks

Instructor led courses follow a class schedule with a dedicated Instructor and classmates. The Instructor posts weekly discussions and hosts live sessions via conference call where students can discuss assignments, industry topics etc. with their peers. The live sessions are recorded and archived for reference. The Instructor led option has a heavier workload upfront but offers increased engagement, opportunity for discussion and encourage students to complete the course within a shorter time frame. Tuition for the certificate must be paid in full within the twelve week time period. Students can enter into an Instructor Led program at set start dates on approximately a monthly basis.

Instructor Supported
(Extended Course) – 3-6 Months

Instructor supported courses come with the support of a dedicated Instructor but do not follow a set class schedule. Students work at their own pace to complete the course within a six month time period. The Instructor has pre-recorded lectures that are available for students to review. Students can call into weekly live sessions via conference call with the Instructor Led student sessions but the topics may not align with where they currently are in their coursework. The Instructor supported option offers students continued support from a dedicated instructor with the flexibility to complete the certificate over a longer period of time. Tuition for the certificate must be paid in full within a twelve week time period. Students can enter into an Instructor Supported program usually on a weekly basis.
