Three in a Row! 100 Percent Pass Rate for Herzing Students

June 2011

100 percent pass rate for Herzing students

Herzing College Ottawa Personal Support Workers (PSW) earned another 100 percent pass rate on the National Association of Career College exam. Two previous classes also achieved a 100 percent pass rate. The 2011 class sat for the exam during the first few weeks of their semester in June.

Passing scores are a requirement by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, which recognizes the PSW program. The recognition ensures that any person hired as a personal support worker, starting in 2011, must be a certified graduate of one of three recognized programs – one of which is NACC's PSW program.

Personal Support Workers assist with the tasks of daily living in homes and apartments in the community, long-term facilities, congregate housing settings and day programs. Personal Support Workers must develop a broad range of abilities. They must provide not only for the comfort, safety and well-being of their clients, but also demonstrate sensitivity and respect for those in their care. The attitude, abilities and approach of the worker are critical to the well-being and health of the people they support. There are several occupational abilities/requirements for PSW workers:

  • Reading text
  • Oral communication
  • Working with others
  • Problem solving
  • Decision making
  • Critical thinking
  • Job task planning and organization
  • Significant use of memory
  • Physical ability to assist others

Herzing College - Ottawa’s president congratulates the 2011 Personal Care Worker class.

“I feel privileged to share in the pride that these students feel with respect to their performance on the NACC exams,” said Dr. Michael McAllister.

“All the sacrifices made over the six months of the program are easily justified with this end result!”

Ottawa College President Walks the Walk: Values Education & Successful Employer Partnerships

March 25, 2011

Michael McAllister says he understands first-hand the importance of obtaining the right skills for career success, and how that applies to business. The president of Herzing College – Ottawa returned to school himself in the late 1990s, taking an information technology course in order to add value to his Ph.D. in classical studies. A story about McAllister, his position as college president, and his leadership in the National Association of Career Colleges, was published in the Ottawa Business Journal on March 21, 2011. The article was titled, “Bootstrapping and Books, Ottawa career colleges look to corporate partnerships to pull in students.” Staff members from several career colleges were interviewed about the importance of connecting students to a specific career track. Herzing has enjoyed a successful eight-year partnership with Pharmacie Desjardins, McAllister said. “They get to train you and look and see how you do. Needless to say, if they like what they see, then they will hire.”
